Inside/Outside: A Series of Self Portraits by Regan Brantley
I was recently quite ill where I underwent a number of different diagnostic tests – while they examine your insides and the actual mechanics of what makes you up, the experience was entirely dehumanizing. There is something counter intuitive about looking at a scan of your body and at the same time feeling completely disconnected from it. With this series, I wanted to represent the contrast between true intimacy of self versus the stark reality of more anatomical representations of your being. Through that process I reconnected with, and reclaimed, the medical images as being actually connected to myself as a breathing, emotional human; and as body which is made up of bones, tissues, and all the rest.
